The Carmel Road Racing Group has announced plans for the 2nd Annual Carmel Marathon Championship Weekend. The Carmel Marathon, Carmel Half-Marathon Presented by Runners Forum, Championship Weekend 8K and 1-Mile Family Fitness Walk will take place on Saturday, April 21, 2012 in Carmel, Indiana.

Runners Forum, a long-time provider of running, walking and triathlon apparel and equipment with locations in Carmel and Indianapolis, was also announced as the official retailer and presenting sponsor for the half-marathon. As part of the partnership, ASICS will provide official Carmel Marathon Championship Weekend technical apparel to marathon, half-marathon and 8K registrants.

“We’re really excited to bring the Carmel Marathon back with a new date in April,” said Todd Oliver, president of Carmel Road Racing Group and Carmel Marathon Championship Weekend. “We were honored to have received such enthusiasm from participants and the running community on a national scale in its first year. Not only will the earlier date in 2012 bring ideal temperatures for the weekend’s events, but we’ll also be able to provide a bigger post-race celebration, closer parking and a spring training program that works with all major running events in central Indiana.”

All races will again start and finish at the Carmel Palladium at the Center for Performing Arts with the courses passing through many of the city’s scenic areas, including the Carmel Arts and Design District, Old Town Carmel and Carmel Clay Parks. Participants and their supporters are invited to the Center Green, adjacent to the Palladium, for the post-race celebration that will include live music, award presentations, massages and vendors.

The Carmel Marathon Fitness Expo, free and open to the public, will move to a new location inside the Monon Community Center to better accommodate the interest of vendors. The expo will feature a wide variety of sports, fitness and nutrition exhibitors and will offer a new section highlighting green products in honor of Earth Day 2012, also on April 21. All registered participants will receive a free day pass to enjoy the Monon Community Center’s state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor track and aquatics, skate park and waterpark.

The inaugural event in June 2011 attracted participants from 45 states and 3 countries. The Carmel Marathon, a certified Boston qualifier event, is the only full distance currently held in the prosperous and growing suburb located just north of Indianapolis. An impressive elite field of runners from across the country christened the inaugural event including David Mart (2:33:05) (Michigan) and Ashlie Olp (3:15:48) in the full marathon, Jesse Davis (1:07:49) and Ann Alyanak (1:18:32) in the half-marathon. Bobby Mack of North Carolina won the USA Track and Field 8K event in 23:05 and was recently named a Roads Scholar by the Road Runners Club of America. Half-marathon second place female finisher Laura Farley went on to qualify for the Olympic Trials distance at this year’s Chicago Marathon.

The fast, flat courses for both the marathon and half-marathon have been officially certified with USA Track and Field.

“The Carmel Marathon Championship Weekend is really a positive event for the entire community-for economic development, travel and tourism, culture and of course fitness,” Oliver said. “After a successful inaugural event earlier this year, we’re looking to build on that momentum and continue with an emerging tradition for Carmel and its visitors from across the country. With full, half, 8K races and a one-mile walk, we have something for everyone.”
