Indianapolis, Indiana, 3:00 PM, Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011. Leilan McNally and Caleb Stokes stepped onto Monument Circle on Thursday, Dec. 15, at 12:00 PM, in an attempt to become the world record holders for continuous bell ringing and to raise money on behalf of the Salvation Army. They broke the old record of 36 hours at midnight on Friday night, and before it was all over, they completed 60 straight hours of bell ringing at midnight on Saturday night — standing the entire time without food or outside aid and in sub-freezing temperatures.

To put this in perspective, go out and stand on your front porch and wave at the traffic as it goes by your house. Don’t sit down once. Don’t eat anything. Don’t drink anything but water or Gatorade. You can go to the bathroom–but only for ten minutes every four hours. And oh yes: don’t forget to keep ringing that little holiday bell in your hand. Then let me know how long you last. These guys lasted 2 1/2 days. I spent a paltry two hours with them on Saturday morning (see photo above) and couldn’t wait to get back into the warmth of my vehicle. I have total admiration and respect for Leilan and Caleb for what they have done.

Congratulations to two of Indy’s best young men on this remarkable (and frankly unbelievable) accomplishment for a worthy cause!
