Bundle-up and get ready for some frosty fun in Elkhart County, Indiana communities along the Heritage Trail. Here’s a line-up of activities certain to shake-off the winter blahs.

Kick off the New Year watching master ice carvers chisel, saw and transform 300-pound blocks of ice into amazing sculptures at the Fire & Ice Festival, January 6-7, in downtown Goshen. Then warm up sampling steaming bowls of chili during Saturday’s Chili Fire Competition. Downtown shops and restaurants join the fun with plenty of hot specials. And kids stay toasty-warm roasting marshmallows.  Admission is free.

Families can show-off their snowman building skills and compete for prizes during the Snowman Building Contest.  Come prepared with plenty of snowman adornments and lots of imagination. It takes place January 21, from 1-2pm, at Kardzhali Park on NIBCO Parkway in downtown Elkhart.  Cost is $5 per family.  Afterwards cozy up by the fire at b on the River for hot chocolate and fresh baked treats.

Anglers “chill-out” at the 8th Annual Elkhart Ice Fishing Derby, February 11, from 8am-2pm, at Ideal Beach Water Park on Heaton Lake. Sponsored by Michiana Bank Anglers Club, it’s a two-person team derby, so the team with the most qualified fish wins. Take home an award plus a tasty catch!  Registration is at 7am and there’s a $50 per team fee.

Special events include Free Hot Chocolate Thursdays; Ground Hog Day, February 2, (free admission for folks wearing a ground hog hat or costume); and Date Skate (couples skate for one admission) on February 11.
