The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site is proud to announce its latest exhibit commemorating Hoosiers who have taken the plunge into candidacy for President or Vice President of the United States of America: Indiana’s Favorite Sons.

This exhibit will focus on Indiana Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates throughout the years.  The stories of some Hoosier “hopefuls” will also be explored, men who tried but were never party candidates.

One of the earliest Vice-presidential candidates on the Free Democrat ticket under John P. Hale was Indiana native George Julian, who ran in 1852.  Julian was first elected in 1845 to the Indiana House of Representatives as a Whig.

Eugene V. Debs of Terre Haute was nominated for president five times between 1904 and 1920, representing the Socialist Party.

Wendell Willkie was nominated for president on the Republican Party ticket in 1940.

Indiana’s Favorite Sons opens Friday, March 16, 2012 and closes Saturday, November 10, 2012. The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am – 3:30 pm, with tours every hour and half hour; with the last tour beginning at 3:30 pm. Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $3 for students (ages 5-17). Please call 317-631-1888 for more information.
