14th Annual free Arts and Crafts Event

Brown County, Indiana Artists Studio & Garden Driving Tour is scheduled for June 22-24, 2012: Fri/Sat 9 AM to 6 PM, and Sun 10 AM to 5 PM., featuring daily demonstrations, light refreshments, and guest artists.

When it comes to fine arts and traditional crafts, few areas of the country can match the diversity and concentration of talent seen in Brown County, Indiana, which has been recognized as the Art Colony of the Midwest for over a century. Brown County is now part of the Indiana Artisans Trails — “ArtRoad46” connecting Bloomington, Nashville and Columbus.

Those arts and crafts will be on display this summer, and you can see them for a price that can’t be beat: free.

23 working artists who run the gamut of artistic media are gearing up for the 14th annual Studio & Garden Tour on June 22-24 . They will be demonstrating and selling their art to visitors who take part in this free, self-guided tour.

Brown County is a place where art, nature and adventure live in harmony. This tour is a unique experience with the opportunity to discover nine working studios nestled in the woods along the picturesque roads where artists and craftspeople of all types live and work.

Our county is small and the studios are a 5 to 15 minute drive from one another giving you just enough time to enjoy the early summer scenery. Also some studios have one or two guest artists!

During the weekend of June 22-24, 12 or more studios open their studios and gardens to the public. Visitors can watch artists create and demonstrate their particular craft and may choose to take home a fine handcrafted piece of Brown County art. Some studios even offer opportunities for visitors to try the process themselves, and offer classes throughout the year.

The wide variety of artistic media is impressive; including glass, metal, wood, pottery, fibers and weaving. Also oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, pastels, mixed media, silk painted scarves, forged iron work, collage, cards, gourd vessels & figures, lampworked beads and PMC jewelry, scrimshaw, knitting, crochet and photography.

The TC Steele Historic Site is Tour Headquarters, featuring the home, studio and gardens of TC Steele. Steele came to Brown County over 100 years ago and started the community as a well-known artist colony, leaving an artistic legacy that continues to draw artists, craftspeople, and collectors to these beautiful rolling hills.

The Studio & Garden Tour is an annual event, always slated for the last full weekend in June. Many of the studios are also open for the month of October for the Back Roads of Brown County driving tour of arts and crafts studios. Many of our studios are open year round.

Brochures are available at our map pickup sites, the Visitors Center in Nashville, all studios, and many area businesses. This event is funded in part by a grant from the Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
