The 82nd annual Marion County Fair opens its gates on the evening of June 22, 2012, a month earlier than usual, hoping to avoid rising temperatures and separate from other regional events taking place mid-summer during its traditional July date.

“Our fair puts emphasis on bringing both rural and urban communities together via a wide variety of 4-H activities, fun events, contests, demos, and concerts involving the entire family,” said Cathy Clark, Marion County Fair Board president. “This year, we’re introducing a whole new experience and anticipate a positive reaction to the change.”

The fairgrounds are located on 123 acres at 7300 E. Troy Ave., just east of the I-465 & Southeastern Ave. interchange. Admission is a family-friendly $5 per person, with children 5 and under admitted free, all military with valid ID admitted free, and plenty of convenient free parking.

A $1 off admission coupon is available at or on the cover of the official Marion County Fair program, available at local library branches and sponsor locations.

A new Indiana-based midway operator, North American Midway Entertainment (NAME), one of the top in the nation, will bring over two dozen first-class rides and attractions including a 100-foot drop tower, a Spider spin-ride, a state-of-the-art LED-lighted Ferris wheel, numerous carnival games and two automated ticket machines.

NAME will introduce a new “Dollar Midway Night” promotion on Mon, June 25 and Wed, June 27 to give fair-goers a chance to ride the Midway for just $1 each. Bracelets for unlimited rides can be purchased for only $25, valid for June 22-23, 26, and 28-30.

The first-ever Artisans Day will be held Sat, June 23 from noon to 7 p.m., allowing visitors to view and purchase original, hand-made arts and craft items from regional artists.

Through a partnership with the Indianapolis Air Show, Midwest Balloon Rides will provide tethered rides, weather permitting, Sat, June 23 and Fri, June 29, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $10, and all proceeds benefit the Riley Children’s Foundation and Riley Hospital for Children through the Central Indiana Community Foundation.

The Indiana Recycling Coalition will provide 80 recycling bins helping the fair go “green,” collecting glass, plastic bottles and pop cans next to trash cans throughout the fairgrounds.

The Empire Beauty Schools Princess Pageant will kick off opening night at 5 p.m. Shortly after, Gary Loveless, the south and southeast outer region neighborhood liaison to Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, will officially open the fair at 6:30 p.m. during a ribbon-cutting ceremony outside of the administration building.
