In honor of what would have been Julia Child’s 100th birthday, the Indianapolis City Market is hosting a week-long celebration of Julia Child-themed events as a tribute to the culinary icon.
The events begin Wednesday, Aug. 8 featuring local chef Thom England presenting a cooking demonstration in the Market’s Clark Appliance Demonstration Kitchen from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Throughout the week local chefs such as Brad Gates and Jennifer Laughner will share their stories, tips and tricks for following and adapting Child’s recipes.
Throughout the week, visitors to City Market will have a chance compete in a Julia Child trivia contest, don their favorite Julia Child frock and have their picture taken at the Julia Child photo station, and participate in a scavenger hunt to find “hidden Julia’s” all over the Market. Many of the Market merchants will offer a Julia Child-themed dish.
On Wednesday, Aug. 15, Julia’s birthday, the week of events culminates in the Julia’s Kitchen Cook-Off, which will feature students from The Chef’s Academy and Ivy Tech Culinary programs. In this timed cooking challenge the students will put a modern spin on a Julia Child’s dish. The Cook-Off begins at 11 a.m.
The entire community is invited to come out and share memories of Julia Child and her cooking on a public memory board located on the north end of City Market’s Mezzanine. This week-long celebration has something for everyone!
