The 65th annual Persimmon Festival continues its legacy when it is held September 22 – 29, 2012 in Mitchell, a city in Lawrence County, Indiana. Over 40,000 people are expected to attend and participate in the event this year.

The Persimmon Festival is the yearly celebration of the Indiana area’s most famous fruit. The persimmon is a part of American culinary history and grows abundantly throughout the Lawrence County area. A persimmon is a plum-sized fruit that has an orange color with a unique figgy-citrus flavor.

During the festival, a persimmon pudding contest is held. Persimmon pudding is a baked pudding dessert that tastes similar to pumpkin pie filling and is created with the fruit’s pulp. It has the texture of gingerbread and is usually served in squares with a dollop of whipped cream. The persimmon pudding contest is one of the favorite events at the Persimmon Festival.

Visitors can purchase locally-made persimmon pulp at Applacres, an orchard and general store in nearby Bedford, to bake persimmon pudding at home. The award-winning recipe can be found on the Lawrence County Tourism Commission website,

The festival’s week-long schedule is filled with, kids’ activities, exhibits, contests, live entertainment, a carnival and one of the state’s largest parades. The festival kicks off with the Candlelight Tour of the Pioneer Village at Spring Mill State Park. Costumed interpreters demonstrate pioneer life at the historic buildings and the working grist mill that grinds corn before your eyes.

The Persimmon Festival also includes a community-wide yard sale, horseshoe tournament, road rally, karaoke, a 5k run/walk, antique tractor show and food. For the complete schedule of events, visit
