Bloomington is a beautiful destination all year long, but October may be one of the very best times to visit.  The weather is crisp and dense tree canopy that covers the city turns to bright fall colors, and the smell of tailgate grills can be detected almost every weekend.  Indeed, football season is in full swing in October, with the IU Hoosiers hosting two Big Ten teams this month.  It all starts on October 6 when the Hoosiers take on  Michigan State in the exciting Homecoming match up.  Homecoming events take place all week, including an exciting pep rally that Friday night.  Then on October 13 the Buckeyes of Ohio State come to town, which means a large and energized crowd.  Go Hoosiers!

The local theater companies are in full  swing this month, with several shows taking place. The Bloomington Playwrights Project will feature Rx by Kate Fodor, a comedy about love (and prescription pills) on October 4-13.  Cardinal Stage Company presents the family-friendly show Knuffle Bunny, a sweet and heartwarming play based on the story by Mo Willems on October 6-21.  Then the IU Theatre and Drama Department present the classic Richard III on October 19-27.  There are comedy, drama and family plays—in other words, there’s great theater in Bloomington.

Even though the weather is a little cooler, it’s still a great time to enjoy Lake Monroe and the surrounding Hoosier National Forest. There are some special events taking place at Lake Monroe this month to guide your adventure, like Campfire Stories & S’mores on October 6 and Into the Autumn Woods on October 13. Get out and explore the gorgeous landscape of South-Central Indiana in fall.

Things get a little spooky with the Halloween events at the end of the month.  Watch a silent movie with accompanying organ music played by Dennis James on October 26, get cold chills with the skate and scare event on October 27 at ice rink, and make some creepy crafts at the Ghostly Gathering at Paynetown SRA on October 27 and 28.  These are even more treats (and a few tricks) happening this month, so have some Halloween fun!

There are many more events, shows and performances taking place this month, including live local music every night of the week!  For more information on events, restaurants, shopping and attractions, go to visitbloomington.com.
