Twinkling lights and the scent of pine seem to be ever-present in Bloomington during the month of December.  It creates a quaint setting for the holiday season, putting everyone in a cheerful mood and encouraging some serious shopping!  Downtown Bloomington is especially lovely during this time of year, with the canopy of lights illuminating the courthouse square.

Downtown vendors offer up some great deals on unique gift items, many of them made locally.  Fine art by local and national artists, unique children’s clothing and toys, rare books, outdoor gear, apparel and accessories—it’s all available downtown.  The ambiance—and the shopping—of downtown just can’t be beat during the month of December.

But there’s plenty more than shopping in Bloomington this month.  If you’re in the mood for some holiday shows, don’t miss the tradition of The Nutcracker, presented by the IU Ballet December 1-2.  This timeless tale is a treat for the entire family and a chance to see the excellent ballet and musical performances of world class artists at the Jacobs School of Music.

Another classic show takes place December 21 through January 5 with the Cardinal Stage Company’s presentation of The Wizard of Oz.  Cardinal is known for their professional, high-quality productions and this one is sure to do the same.  It’s quality theater that’s family-friendly too, with a flying witch, great songs and a message that warms the heart on these cold December days.  This is one of many quality theater productions taking place this month, so check out the IU Theatre & Drama and Bloomington Playwrights Project productions too.

If you haven’t made plans for New Year’s Eve, consider a weekend getaway to Bloomington!  There are a variety of events happening that weekend, so no matter what your interests are you’ll have a good time ringing in the New Year.  As mentioned, the theater production of The Wizard of Oz will be showing that weekend.

There will also be some big laughs at the Comedy Attic with Bob & Tom Show favorites, Ben Moore and Josh Arnold, performing stand up on New Year’s Eve and counting down to midnight with a champagne toast.  The Hoosier women’s basketball team will be playing on New Year’s Eve- sure to be an amazing game with the revitalized team taking on UIC.  And later that night, you can catch great music like local favorites The Dynamics at Eagle Pointe Resort or the rocking bluegrass of Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band at the Bluebird.  Pair one or two (or three) of these events with some great dining at a local restaurant and you’ve got a stellar way to welcome 2013.

There are many more events, shows and performances taking place this month, including live local music every night of the week.  For more information on events, restaurants, shopping and attractions, go to  You’ll also find some fantastic hotel deals this month and next!
