The University of Indianapolis will inaugurate its ninth president this month, just as the UIndy community begins charting a course for the next two decades of its development.

President Robert L. Manuel, 44, will address the UIndy community, guests and delegates from other universities during a public investiture ceremony that begins at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013, in the university’s Nicoson Hall gymnasium. A reception will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the atrium of Schwitzer Student Center, 1400 E. Hanna Ave.

Manuel took office last year and in October launched the Vision 2030 initiative, which gathered ideas for the institution’s future from more than 1,600 students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff. While a series of conversations focused on the long-term vision, several task forces addressed more immediate needs in areas such as technology, campus life and use of space.

Now UIndy leaders are assessing that input to develop budget and fundraising priorities for the coming years. A likely element of those plans involves partnering with business, government and nonprofit groups on mixed-use development near campus. Such projects – aligned with the university’s academic strengths in health care, education and other fields – would create hands-on learning opportunities for students, research sites for faculty, and new services and attractions to boost quality of life for local residents.

The investiture ceremony highlights a week of events designed to engage students, faculty, staff, alumni, neighbors and other friends of the university. A full schedule and registration information are available at www.uindy.edu/inauguration.
