Conner Prairie Interactive History Park will kick off its 2013 outdoor season with 11 straight fun-filled days so guests can celebrate Easter weekend and Spring Break on its grounds.

The park is also offering new, exciting and interactive fun for all ages. Conner Prairie, Indiana’s only Smithsonian Affiliate, is launching Create.Connect, a new history, science, technology, engineering and mathematics interactive exhibit. Outside, guests will enjoy exploring the natural world on the new Nature Walk, the highlight of Conner Prairie’s 2013 “Year of Nature.” To celebrate Easter, Conner Prairie is hosting Breakfast with the Easter Bunny for the first time ever and will also show off its new baby animals.

During Opening Week, Conner Prairie will invite guests onto its grounds from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily March 28 through April 7. During the remaining weeks in April, the hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

New Activities and Experiences:


Opens March 28, accessible during regular hours

Test your skills through the scientific method and discover how science, technology, engineering and mathematics have an integral place in Indiana history.

Wind Power: Stand in the shadow of an authentic 1890s Flint & Walling windmill, then make your own small windmill and test how much wind power you can generate.

Rural Electrification: Did you know Boone County was one of the first areas in the nation to extend electricity out to its farmers? Learn how this changed the lifestyles and work routines of Hoosier farmers and build your own circuit with wires, switches and LEDs.

Forces in Motion: Examine Rube Goldberg® Machines – contraptions that perform a simple task through a series of complex steps – built by Purdue University students and Hoosier high school students for competitions. Challenge yourself and invent your own machine.

Conner Prairie Nature Walk

Opens March 28, accessible during regular hours

Explore Conner Prairie’s natural setting in our brand new Nature Walk. Trek along a gravel path that begins in the heart of our outdoor historic areas and winds through a forest and along the top of a levee that is flanked by woods, farmland, prairie and the White River. Along the way you will encounter plant and animal life and discover the importance of nature with your family. Learn how land was used in the past by Native Americans and William Conner, and how it is used today. An elevated observation deck will provide a wonderful view of the prairie, which was created to attract migratory birds. The first 400 children will receive a free magnifying glass to help in their expedition. Included with general admission. Recommended for ages 3 and older. (.64 miles round trip)

Breakfast with the Easter Bunny

March 30, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Mingle with the Easter Bunny and share a wonderful meal that includes mini muffins, fruit salad, scrambled eggs, sausage links, breakfast potatoes, biscuits and gravy, and more. Decorate your own Easter egg cookie then indulge in it.

Cost: $16.95/adults $12.95/adult member, $9.95/youth (ages 2-12), $7.95/youth member (ages 2-12). Price includes admission to outdoor experience areas. Reservations are required at 317-776-6006.

Easter Weekend at Conner Prairie

March 30 and 31, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Meet the new additions to our Animal Encounters Barn, including adorable rabbits and baby chicks. Stroll along the new Nature Walk to see early signs of spring. Visit 1836 Prairietown and discover how Martha Zimmerman dyes Easter eggs for her family. Participate in an ongoing Easter scavenger hunt and possibly win a prize. Compete in egg-and-spoon races, egg rolling and historic games. Interact with Prairietown residents who are putting on their best Easter Sunday attire for church and dinner. In Taste the Past, sample dried apple cake. Indoors, make an Easter basket in Craft Corner and have scientific fun with Peeps® marshmallows – make them dissolve, melt and fizz. The Easter Bunny will make appearances on March 30.

April 6 and 7, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Experience what it was like to be a Civil War solider in Civil War Journey: Raid on Indiana. Feel the thrill of loading and firing a reproduction Civil War-era musket. Additional $10 fee. Ages 12 and older.

Outdoor and Indoor Experiences

All the popular outdoor historic experience areas will re-open on March 28:1836 Prairietown, 1863 Civil War Journey: Raid on Indiana, 1859 Balloon Voyage (flights are weather dependent), Conner Homestead and Animal Encounters Barn, and Lenape Indian Camp. Come inside and create a handmade masterpiece in Craft Corner and allow the little ones to play and pretend in Discovery Station.

Remainder of April: Thursday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

May through October: Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
