Today is Memorial Day, a federal holiday in the United States to honor and remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. This observance originally began in the 19th century after the Civil War, and was originally known as Decoration Day.
There are a number of memorials and museums in Indianapolis and central Indiana dedicated to the memory of these brave soldiers and sailors. Here are a few:
- Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, Monument Circle, downtown Indianapolis
- Indiana War Memorial Museum, 431 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis
- USS Indianapolis Memorial, Senate Ave and Walnut Street, Indianapolis
- Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial, White River State Park, 801 West Washington Street, Indianapolis
- Hancock County Veterans Park, South Street and State Road 9, Greenfield (pictured above)
- George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, 401 South 2nd Street, Vincennes
- And many more across the state
Visit one of these sites today and take time to remember those who have bravely served their country.
