One of Indiana’s largest street festivals, the Riley Festival in Greenfield, gets underway today for the 44th consecutive year, taking up portions of 12 city blocks in downtown Greenfield, Indiana, adjacent to the Courthouse Square where US Highway 40 and State Road 9 intersect.

It’s a huge festival with arts and crafts, hundreds of vendor booths, live entertainment, lots of good food and refreshments, a parade, poetry readings, pumpkin decorating, old-fashioned baseball, a quilt show, a living history encampment, the Riley Run, and lots more. The festival celebrates the birthday of the Hoosier Poet, James Whitcomb Riley.

The Riley Festival is open on Thursday 5-9 pm, Friday and Saturday, 9 am to 9 pm, and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm (to the best of my knowledge, it’s the only major street festival in Indiana that closes at 9 pm; even parish festivals across Indiana are typically open until 11 pm or midnight). Admission is free.
