A small group of donors and officials from the Central Indiana Land Trust will gather on Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. to celebrate the opening of Morgan County’s newest nature preserve, the Fred and Dorothy Meyer Nature Preserve.

Following a ribbon cutting, the Meyer Preserve will be open to the public for hiking, birdwatching and enjoying. The 69-acre preserve is located off State Road 67 south of Mooresville on Observatory Road.

The Central Indiana Land Trust, which works to conserve and protect natural areas that Hoosiers hold dear, protected the 69 acres in three different land transactions and will ensure that it is protected from future development and open for public use.

The most recent purchase was made possible by a significant donation from retired businessman Bob Meyer and his family with a gift from the Robert R. and Gayle T. Meyer Family Fund, a fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation. Bob’s father, Fred Meyer, served on the board of the Indiana chapter of The Nature Conservancy and was instrumental in getting the state’s first dedicated Nature Preserve established in 1969.
