Irish Music Magazine hails singer songwriter Cathie Ryan as “one of the best we have.” For over two decades, including five critically acclaimed albums, countless musical collaborations, multiple awards, and worldwide touring, Cathie Ryan has been in the vanguard of Irish music. The Cathie Ryan Band is the closing act of the 2013-2014 Sound & Spirit concert series, Friday, April 11, 2014 at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Boulevard, East Drive, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Blessed with a voice of luminous clarity, a gift for writing heart-stirring originals, and unearthing gems from the Irish and American traditions, Cathie happily shares the stage with an award-winning band.  Featuring Patsy O’Brien on guitar, Matt Mancuso on fiddle, and Brian Melick on percussion, the band weaves subtle arrangements and harmonies around Cathie’s vocals and match her charming repartee with dazzling sets of traditional tunes.

Cathie Ryan hails from Detroit surrounded by close Irish roots that gave her the gift of storytelling and music.  But she grew up in neighborhoods embedded in Country and Motown, too.  Before her music career took off, she used her English Lit degree as a classroom teacher.  She returns – both independent of and in conjunction with her concert appearances – conducting workshops that focus on Traditional Irish Singing, Irish Mythology and Folklore, and the crucial importance of the arts in education.

The Cathie Ryan Band has a loyal following from appearing at performing arts centers, festivals, folk clubs, and with symphonies. Their live performances are often seen on public television and heard on radio like NPR’s Mountain Stage, Thistle and Shamrock, BBC, Radio Scotland, and RTÉ and RnaG in Ireland.  Sound & Spirit looks forward to opening doors to another great crowd.

From Bach to jazz to bluegrass, Sound & Spirit concerts celebrate regional and international artistry and present them free of charge to the Broad Ripple Community and beyond.  Funded by supporters and the audience, we accept a free-will offering to maintain standards of future events.  Childcare is provided.
