Visit Hendricks County, as part of its sponsorship of the “Night Before the 500,” will for the first time ever give one lucky race fan the opportunity to be grand marshal of the May 24, 2014 event on the oval at Lucas Oil Raceway.
Visit Hendricks County is now accepting applications by asking race fans to share a story or experience demonstrating why they should serve as grand marshal for this event.
“We are really excited to hear from the diehard fans of this sport and give one an opportunity to be grand marshal for this great race,” said Sarah Ferguson, director of marketing for Visit Hendricks County. “We want to hear their stories from this event and this track especially considering Lucas Oil Raceway is one of the county’s most prominent visitor attractions.”
The fan chosen for the distinction will follow in a long line of previous honorees, including last year’s grand marshal, A.J. Watson, a USAC Hall of Fame inductee. The winner also will receive four tickets to the race, access to the Visit Hendricks County suite and will be honored during pre-race ceremonies on the track.
The Visit Hendricks County Night Before the 500 is a long-standing event showcasing USAC Midget, Pro Mazda, and USF2000 racing. Racing legends like A.J. Foyt, who was the first winner in 1961, have taken part in this event. Other past winners include Johnny Parsons, Mel Kenyon, Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne.
“No sport has a more passionate fan base than motorsports so when Visit Hendricks County presented the idea of awarding a race fan with the opportunity to serve as grand marshal, it made perfect sense,” said Randy Simpson, general manager at Lucas Oil Raceway. “When you get down to it, Lucas Oil Raceway is really in the business of making memories, and this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for one lucky race fan. I cannot wait to read each fan’s story – I might even submit my own!”
Fans who want to be entered in the contest have until April 24 to submit their story. Applicants must be 21 years or older to enter and are limited to one entry per household.
To submit an entry, go to www.TourHendricksCounty.com and look for the Grand Marshal Contest button. In addition to the grand prize winner, two other entries will be awarded runners-up prize packages which include four general admission tickets to the Visit Hendricks County Night Before the 500 race.
