‘Animals and All That Jazz’ at the Indianapolis Zoo

As the summer heats up, guests can keep it cool with Animals and All That Jazz presented by Indiana Members Credit Union. This rhythmic series premiered in the summer of 1988 just weeks after the Zoo’s opening in White River State Park. As one of the longest-running events at the Zoo, the tradition continues for 2014 with the series kicking off July 10 and continuing Thursday nights through Aug. 14, 2014.

Concerts last from 5:30 to 8:30pm, plus, with extended Zoo hours, visitors can see the animals and enjoy rides until 7pm. Members can enjoy free unlimited rides from 5-7pm on a different attraction featured weekly.

In addition to regular Zoo fare and a cash bar, each concert features themed food stations with a variety of options available for purchase. Plus, adult guests can enjoy free beer sampling from Sun King Brewery.

With plenty of animal exhibits nearby, as well as the Kroger Splash Park, concert goers can enjoy the full Zoo experience without missing a beat. This year’s Animals and All That Jazz lineup features:

July 10:

  • Artist: Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra — Indy’s premier repertoire for large jazz ensembles, known for their world-class arrangements based off classic tunes.
  • Food stations: “Backyard BBQ” — salad bar, BBQ garlic wings or BBQ ribs, peach cobbler
  • Featured ride: White River Junction Train presented by Marathon

July 17:

  • Artist: Cynthia Layne —Returning to Animals and All That Jazz, Cynthia never ceases to impress. As one of the city’s most beloved singers she’ll stun with versatile vocals, unique style of soul, R&B, funk and pop.
  • Food stations: “The Goodfellas” — salad bar, meatball marinara, pasta carbonara, cannoli with pistachio ice cream
  • Featured ride: Carousel presented by Geico

July 24:

  • Artist: Janiece Jaffe and DaVida with special guest Mark Buselli —This talented, subtle and sweet vocalist and her band take on jazz and pop songs with special guest, and gifted writer, arranger and performer, Mark Buselli.
  • Food stations: “The Shanghai Kid” — salad bar, pan fried noodle bar, fruit salad tapioca
  • Featured ride: Kōmbo Family Coaster presented by Outback Steakhouse

July 31:

  • Artist: Direct Contact — New to Animals and All That Jazz, this high energy Latin jazz band is known throughout the Midwest for their unique combination of musical flavors.
  • Food stations: “Night of Tijuana” — salad bar, street taco, sopapilla with ice cream
  • Featured ride: White River Junction Train presented by Marathon

Aug. 7:

  • Artist: Blair Clark —This band offers a blend of pop, R&B, soul and a touch of jazz to create an electrifying sound that makes the audience want more.
  • Food stations: “The Mediterranean Night” — salad bar, kabobs, ice cream sandwich
  • Featured ride: Carousel presented by Geico

Aug. 14:

  • Artist: Red Hot Whiskey Sippers —Take a trip down to New Orleans with this entertaining bayou-based ensemble as they make their Animals and All That Jazz debut.
  • Food stations: “Creole Night” — salad bar, jambalaya with creole, rum raisin bread pudding
  • Featured ride: Kōmbo Family Coaster presented by Outback Steakhouse

Guests are welcome to sit at tables or bring lawn chairs to get comfortable for the show. In the event of inclement weather, the festivities will simply move under the Party Pavilion near the front of the Zoo.

Concerts are included with regular Zoo admission and free to Zoo members. Guests are encouraged to save time and money on their Zoo visit by purchasing tickets online at IndianapolisZoo.com.

Discount tickets are available at Indianapolis-area Indiana Members Credit Union locations, or guests can save $2 at the gate by bringing in a Dean’s milk jug to be recycled. Concert goers can also find a coupon on the Zoo’s Facebook page that’s good for $4 off admission at the gate for entry after 4pm on the night of the event. For more information, call 317-630-2001.
