“The President’s Own” United States Marine Band will perform on Sunday, September 7, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University, 4602 Sunset Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana.

The concert is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. They will be available beginning August 8 at 10:00 a.m. at the Clowes Hall box office.

In the style of the band’s 17th director, John Philip Sousa, who initiated the concert tour tradition in 1891, Marine Band Director Lt. Col. Jason K. Fettig has chosen a diverse mix of programs—from traditional band repertoire and marches to instrumental solos. Selections will include:

  • “Jubilee,” an Edwin Franko Goldman march.
  • “Oodles of Noodles” by Jimmy Dorsey, transcribed by Thomas Knox and featuring alto saxophone soloist Master Sergeant Steve Longoria.
  • Stephen Bulla’s arrangement of The Harold Arlen Songbook, including “Get Happy,” “Blues in the Night,” and “Lose That Long Face” featuring mezzo-soprano soloist Gunnery Sergeant Sara Dell’Omo.

Colonel Michael Colburn, recently retired Director of “The President’s Own” and new Director of Bands at Butler University, will guest conduct Malcolm Arnold’s “Four Scottish Dances” (transcribed by John Paynter) and the John Philip Sousa march “Semper Fidelis.”

The first half of the concert will be conducted by Fettig. The second half will feature Assistant Director First Lieutenant Ryan J. Nowlin.

The Marine Band is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. Founded in 1798, the band has performed for every U.S. president since.
