An Indy Girl’s Summer in Indiana Dunes Country

I’ve been in Indiana Dunes Country for almost three months now while doing my summer internship. It’s been like a beach vacation without having to drive 15 hours to Florida.
Fortunately, I have a couple weeks left to enjoy the rest of the summer up north by relaxing on the beach, attending events like Indiana Dunes Tourism’s 30th Anniversary Celebration and eating at award-winning restaurants like Lucrezia Cafe in Chesterton.
One of my favorite parts about living up north has been the beach. There are so many different trails and nature hikes to explore. If you are a fan of biking, there are plenty of bike trails to ride on that get you from one place to the next. At the end of July, Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is unveiling a new bike path called the Dunes Kankakee Trail that travels from the Visitor Center for three miles to Indiana Dunes State Park, and which will eventually go to the Kankakee River.

If you are thinking about venturing up north into Indiana Dunes Country to explore what it has to offer, a helpful guide is the “Must See and Do” in the Indiana Dunes Country Activities Guide. It features 14 options on exiting things to do.
The Broken Wagon Bison Farm was one of the most exciting things I got to enjoy from this list. On the tour, you are able to come face to face with over 100 of America’s largest native land mammals. This is especially exciting as it’s Indiana’s bicentennial this year.
No matter what you choose to do while visiting Indiana Dunes Country, it is sure to blow you away. The food, people and atmosphere can’t be beat… And that’s coming from an Indy girl. Visit www.indianadunes.com for more information.
Editor’s Note: Danielle Pieratt is a senior attending Ball State University, working toward a public relations degree. She is currently an intern for Indiana Dunes Tourism, the official tourism agency for Porter County.

Join the American Dairy Association Indiana and its Hoosier Dairy Farm Families as they celebrate National Ice Cream Month for the 27th consecutive year with the Ice Cream Social on the Circle.
On Friday, July 8, 2016, from 11 am to 2 pm, volunteers and local celebrities will be serving up giant ice cream sundaes with all the toppings in front of Hilbert Circle Theatre on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana.
This event features celebrities such as “Two Chicks and a Hammer’s” Karen E Laine and Mina Starsiak of HGTV’s “Good Bones” and international recording duo out of Indianapolis, Lily & Madeline, as well as local media, sports, and business personalities.
Other features include face painters, the Pacers Fan Van, live music, and special guests all the way from Purdue – live dairy cow Molly and her calves.
All proceeds from this event will go directly to Girls Inc of Greater Indianapolis, a nonprofit with a mission to inspire girls of all ages to be strong, smart, and bold. Girls Inc works with local schools and community centers to engage young girls in these empowering programs.
This is the second year that the ADAI has partnered with Girls Inc for this event, last year $5,550 was donated in support of this impactful organization.
As for the ice cream itself, the celebs will be dishing out Edy’s Slow Churned Light Ice Cream topped with a choice of Kroger’s chocolate, strawberry, and caramel syrups (sugar free options available.) Prairie Farm whipped cream and Kroger’s maraschino cherries and sprinkles complete the treat to individual perfection.
This event highlights the fact that Indiana is No. 2 in ice cream production in the United States, with Edy’s Grand Ice Cream headquarters in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The American Dairy Association is honored to combine the taste of rural Indiana dairy farms with the positive economic influence ice cream has on Indiana each year.
