INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 25, 2016) – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department will once again take on the Indianapolis Fire Department in a Hoops & Heroes basketball showdown at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016 at Marian University to kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Proceeds from the event will support the safety, stability, and self-sufficiency programs at The Julian Center.
Big Goals This Year
IMPD won the game last year, 65 to 60 in front of 700 attendees, and leads the annual series 2 to 1. The event raised $82,000 for the nonprofit that provides shelter and hope to survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their families. Organizers hope to fill 1,000 seats and raise $100,000 in 2016.
“While all for a good cause, the officers and firefighters take this game very seriously,” said Catherine O’Connor, president and CEO, The Julian Center. “Bragging rights are on the line—and the competition is intense. We are forever grateful to these brave men and women who work so tirelessly to keep us safe from abuse and other harm.”
“Dr. Dunk” Youth Basketball Clinic, Other Fun
Prior to tip-off, Darnell “Dr. Dunk” Hillman will host a Jr. Pacers/Jr. Fever basketball clinic for kids age 12 and under. Kids can also explore a police car and fire engine, take the free throw challenge, and enjoy a special halftime show, balloon animals, face painting, and giveaways. Concession stands will be open.
