The other day I was sightseeing in Richmond and Wayne County, Indiana. While visiting with Nancy Sartain at the Richmond/Wayne County Convention and Tourism Bureau (CTB), I came across a unique package that should be of interest to women.

If you stop by the CTB, located at 5701 National Road East in Richmond, you can pick up a “Just Us Girls” pouch (see photo above) containing eight (8) coupons (see below) for discounts on purchases at local galleries, restaurants, boutiques, and more (see below).

There is also a Visitor Savings Booklet included in the pouch, with 54 discount, free admission, BOGO, and free gift offers (see the “Experience Richmond” image below).

All coupons expire on Dec. 31, 2017. So now is the time to round up a group of your best friends and head to eastern Indiana to take a day trip with your BFFs, do some shopping, have some fun, and enjoy some good savings on products and services at area venues.

The Indiana State Museum is pleased to welcome back the 93rd Annual Hoosier Salon Exhibition as part of a new five-year agreement. The museum previously hosted the art tradition from 1990 to 2011. The exhibition runs from July 27 through October 8, 2017 in the museum’s Lincoln Financial Foundation Gallery.

The exhibition features traditional and contemporary, mixed-media and 3D works. During an awards ceremony Wednesday evening, more than $31,000 in prize money was handed out to participating artists. C.W. Mundy was recognized with the $5,000 award for Best of Show for his oil painting Emily in the Black Hat with Veil. The $2,500 Jurors’ Prize of Distinction went to A. Cassia Margolis for Portrait of Margey’s Son. For a full list of winners, click here. All of the winning works are available for purchase through the Hoosier Salon.

“The Indiana State Museum and the Hoosier Salon are both strong statewide organizations, committed to showcasing many of Indiana’s most accomplished artists,” said Mark Ruschman, chief curator of fine arts for the museum. “Many current and past exhibiting artists are represented in our permanent fine art collection.”

The Hoosier Salon was first displayed at Marshall Field’s in Chicago back in 1925. The Daughters of Indiana, a group of women who were born in Indiana but lived in Chicago, created the show to help promote Hoosier artists. In 1942, the Hoosier Salon made the move to Indianapolis and the William H. Block department store. The exhibition moved to L.S. Ayres in 1978 before heading to the Indiana State Museum in 1990. Most recently, the exhibition was displayed at the Indiana Historical Society.

The accompanying student art display features works from artists in grades K-12. A total of 2,720 students from across Indiana submitted entries as part of the 20th Annual Cooperative Calendar of Student Art Contest. Winners of the student contest will be featured in the Electric Consumer’s annual calendar. The display, organized by the Indiana Electrical Cooperative, will run through August 27, 2017 in the museum’s Legacy Theater. Youth works are not for purchase.

8th Annual Indy Criterium @indycrit, July 8, 2017

The 8th annual IU Health Indy Criterium Bicycle Festival rolls into Monument Circle Saturday, July 8, 2017.

This family-friendly festival is a fun way to enjoy bicycling in the heart of the city while watching world-class amateur and professional bicycle racing. Families and bicyclists will also enjoy many of the activities taking place throughout the day including food and beer vendors, music, vendor village, community rides, PNC Kids Zone activities, BMX stunt shows, kids and juniors bicycle races and much more.

The IU Health Indy Criterium Bicycle Festival is the largest criterium bicycle race in the state of Indiana and one of the largest in the Midwest. More than 600 professional and amateur cyclists are expected to compete, drawing in crowds of nearly 20,000 to spectate throughout the day. The IU Health Indy Criterium Bicycle Festival is one of the most hotly contested bicycle races in the Midwest, with hundreds of pro and amateur participants competing. The race will wind through an exciting 1-mile figure-8 course looping through the heart of downtown Indianapolis over the famous Monument Circle bricks.

All proceeds from the IU Health Indy Criterium benefit Freewheelin’ Community Bikes, a local non-profit committed to enhancing life skills for community youth through bicycles. In total, the IU Health Indy Criterium has contributed over $105,000 to Freewheelin’s Earn-A-Bike program that helps inner city youth earn bicycles of their own.

What to watch for:
Indy Crit Kick-Off Ride of over 500 bicyclists starting at 9 a.m. with a parade lap around the race course on closed city streets.

Bicycle-related activities throughout the day for spectators to enjoy or take part in including BMX stunt shows with X-Games athletes, PNC Kids Zone activities, bicycle safety course for kids, face painting, rock wall, bounce house, Silly Safaris animal show and more!

The National Bank of Indianapolis and Faegre Baker Daniels VIP/Celebrity Relay Race on Pacers Bikeshare bicycles at 12:15pm, featuring Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, Indiana Pacers mascot Boomer, Indiana Fever mascot Freddy Fever, Colts cheerleaders, IU Health physicians and local business leaders.

Bicycle helmet giveaway of 200 helmets for kids at the CIBA tent from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

PNC Kids Bicycle Races on Meridian Street at 2 p.m.

Inaugural Indy Bike Parade at 6 p.m. featuring musicians on bicycles, micro-floats pulled by bicycles and race team presentations.

Food and beverages from a variety of local food vendors.

Traffic Advisory:

The bike race will begin and end at Monument Circle. As a result of the race, the following streets will be closed or partially closed from 7:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.:
