Indiana’s favorite food festival – Dig IN, a Taste of Indiana – returns for the sixth year on Aug. 30, 2015 at White River State Park.

The farm-to-fork festival will feature more than 80 dishes and drinks prepared by some of the top chefs, food artisans, brewers and vintners from around the state.

“There’s no other event that brings together so many great Indiana chefs in one place, offering dishes that include local meats and off-the-vine produce grown and harvested right here in Indiana,” said Thom England, executive director of Dig IN.

A general-admission ticket for $35 ($45 after Aug. 23), includes all the samples, plus live performances by Indiana-based musical groups. It’s a menu like no other.

Try pickled shrimp with fried toast, pancetta mac & cheese, watermelon soup or grilled peach shortcake with wildflower Ridge Honey lavender crème.

There will be smoked beef, sweet corn (and street corn), pork carnitas with avocado mousse and fresh, stuffed tomatoes. Plus, there will be plenty of drink options to wash it all down, including more than 15 Indiana craft breweries.

The event is noon to 5 p.m., but an early admission ticket for $60 gets visitors in to begin tastings at 11 a.m. Or, for the ultimate VIP Experience for $120, you’ll get to savor your tastings in an air-cooled tent, plus get rare and reserve beer and wines, and enjoy additional foods prepared by Bluebeard, Milktooth, Recess and FARM Bloomington.

I’ve been a big fan of Scotty’s Brewhouse ever since it opened a few years ago, for its wide variety of menu items, great atmosphere, an enthusiastic social media presence (e.g. @brewhouse on Twitter), and the amusing, gregarious, oft-irreverent tweets of owner Scott Wise (see photo at right), who was on hand at Monday’s event to present the new menu.

Candidly, I’ve been enthralled by watching Scotty’s grow quickly from its single location in Muncie to a dozen locations statewide, including Bloomington, Lafayette, Carmel, Brownsburg, Mishawaka, Fort Wayne, Noblesville (coming in 2015), Franklin (also opening soon in 2015), Southport, two Indianapolis locations (plus a first-cousin: Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Company in Broad Ripple), and a third Indy location coming soon on the near northside–just wait until Scott tells you WHERE! I admire and respect the assertive entrepreneurship inherent in the company’s rapid growth! There’s even an unconfirmed rumor of Scotty’s first out-of-state location.

So even though my recent medical issues precluded me from sampling the fare, I was in attendance at Scotty’s spring menu rollout event at the 96th Street location earlier this week, where 12 new menu items were introduced to a receptive group of 50 social media influencers.

I’ve got to be honest and say that I can’t personally attest to the tastes and flavors of most of these delicious-looking menu items because of my cardiac diet, but I managed to get some photos, so I thought I’d share them with you here:

Avocado Chicken Club

ABOVE: The Avocado Chicken Club includes apple wood smoked chicken, bacon, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, and guacamole. I tried a couple of bites of this (without the bread) and found that the guacamole works really well with the other ingredients. And guacamole is good fat, so hey!

ABOVE: For me, this might be one of the menu items that I could actually have. My cardiologist might go along with this one with a little arm-twisting (smile). The Grilled Romaine Salad has grilled artisan romaine, chopped bacon, bleu cheese crumbles, heirloom tomatoes, and bacon aioli. It’s kind of naked BLT of sorts. For me it was the most eye-catching of the new menu items. Lots of visual appeal.

ABOVE: How about THIS one? A hand-pattied burger with a blend of 60% ground chuck and 40% ground bacon, cheddar cheese, battered and fried bacon, bacon aioli, and a fried egg, all on a pretzel bun. Wowzer!

So I was a good boy, stuck to my guns with some chicken and broccoli, came home satisfied, and am here to share these photos with you. All-in-all, it was an excellent evening receiving high praise from those in attendance.
