Today was the soft opening and media day at Portillo’s, located at 9201 East 116th Street in Fishers, Indiana. The restaurant opens for business on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017, at 10:30 am (and then daily at 10:30 am).

At 9,000 square feet it’s a large facility with seating for 214, the 2nd Portillo’s location in Indiana (the other one is in Merrillville on the south side of US 30 across from Star Plaza Theatre). This is the franchise’s 52nd location in seven states.

Founder Dick Portillo was on hand to welcome his visitors and tell an intriguing story of starting this franchise in Chicago in 1963 in a single mobile wagon called “The Dog House” (at age 22, no less) with just $1,100 in savings. It’s truly a great American rag-to-riches story.

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness was also on hand to welcome Portillo’s to his city and to wish them well.

Portillo’s is renowned for its Chicago Dogs, Italian Beef, and chocolate cake, among many other menu items. I overheard several guests who said they are originally from Chicago and couldn’t wait for this location to open on the north side of Indianapolis. BTW, it’s on the SE corner of Highway 37 and East 116th Street, next door to the new IKEA outlet.

I was astonished by the number of employees working behind the counter–more than I could count. It seemed like 30-40, but that may be on the high side. But obviously it takes a lot of personnel to run an operation of this magnitude.

Here are a few photos from media day. The place was packed with visitors today, and I expect it to remain that way for several weeks to come, as Indy welcomes this new restaurant to the culinary scene. If there is one concern, it will be whether there is sufficient parking–the lot was completely full when I left. So please be patient if you visit Portillo’s in the next month or so.

I’d like to thank Marc Trevino and Ana Espinoza from Portillo’s for the excellent hospitality.

DISCLOSURE NOTICE: Portillo’s provided me (and many other invited guests) with free samples of its food and merchandise in exchange for the promotional consideration.

I’ve been a big fan of Scotty’s Brewhouse ever since it opened a few years ago, for its wide variety of menu items, great atmosphere, an enthusiastic social media presence (e.g. @brewhouse on Twitter), and the amusing, gregarious, oft-irreverent tweets of owner Scott Wise (see photo at right), who was on hand at Monday’s event to present the new menu.

Candidly, I’ve been enthralled by watching Scotty’s grow quickly from its single location in Muncie to a dozen locations statewide, including Bloomington, Lafayette, Carmel, Brownsburg, Mishawaka, Fort Wayne, Noblesville (coming in 2015), Franklin (also opening soon in 2015), Southport, two Indianapolis locations (plus a first-cousin: Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Company in Broad Ripple), and a third Indy location coming soon on the near northside–just wait until Scott tells you WHERE! I admire and respect the assertive entrepreneurship inherent in the company’s rapid growth! There’s even an unconfirmed rumor of Scotty’s first out-of-state location.

So even though my recent medical issues precluded me from sampling the fare, I was in attendance at Scotty’s spring menu rollout event at the 96th Street location earlier this week, where 12 new menu items were introduced to a receptive group of 50 social media influencers.

I’ve got to be honest and say that I can’t personally attest to the tastes and flavors of most of these delicious-looking menu items because of my cardiac diet, but I managed to get some photos, so I thought I’d share them with you here:

Avocado Chicken Club

ABOVE: The Avocado Chicken Club includes apple wood smoked chicken, bacon, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, and guacamole. I tried a couple of bites of this (without the bread) and found that the guacamole works really well with the other ingredients. And guacamole is good fat, so hey!

Beer Battered Onion Rings

ABOVE: The Beer Battered Onion Rings are thick cut and served with mofo mustard.

Berry Spinach Salad

ABOVE: The Berry Spinach Salad is served with spinach, strawberries, blueberries, candied pecans, feta, and honey balsamic dressing. This one is on my list.

Bourbon Chicken Tacos

ABOVE: With grilled chicken, bourbon honey, rainbow cabbage, jalapeno ranch, and green onions, the Bourbon Chicken Tacos are a winner, IMO.

Grilled Romaine Salad

ABOVE: For me, this might be one of the menu items that I could actually have. My cardiologist might go along with this one with a little arm-twisting (smile). The Grilled Romaine Salad has grilled artisan romaine, chopped bacon, bleu cheese crumbles, heirloom tomatoes, and bacon aioli. It’s kind of naked BLT of sorts. For me it was the most eye-catching of the new menu items. Lots of visual appeal.

Instagramwich Bacon Bomb

ABOVE: How about THIS one? A hand-pattied burger with a blend of 60% ground chuck and 40% ground bacon, cheddar cheese, battered and fried bacon, bacon aioli, and a fried egg, all on a pretzel bun. Wowzer!

Joker's Wild Burger

ABOVE: The Joker’s Wild Burger is served with ghost chili pepper jack cheese, beer battered onion rings, and mofo mustard. Mercy mercy me!

Manimal Smash Burger

ABOVE: Two quarter-pound patties smashed thin characterize this Scotty’s burger, served with American cheese, sauteed onions, and thousand island dressing.

ABOVE: This is another I might be able to try, with spring mix, heirloom tomatoes, and red onion. You can add the cheese at no extra charge to go non-Paleo.

Piggy Mac Grilled Cheese

ABOVE: This ought to get your motor runnin’! BBQ pulled pork, cheddar and American cheese, plus macaroni and cheese. Oh my!

Roasted Jalapeno Poutine

ABOVE: Natural cut fries, ghost chili pepper jack cheese, roasted jalapeno country gravy, fresh jalapenos, and green onions make up the Roasted Jalapeno Poutine at Scotty’s.

And oh, by the way, can Scotty’s take care of guys like me on a cardiac diet? Sure:

Scotty's Broccoli

So I was a good boy, stuck to my guns with some chicken and broccoli, came home satisfied, and am here to share these photos with you. All-in-all, it was an excellent evening receiving high praise from those in attendance.
