2nd Annual Blarney Bash: Live music and green beer on the Boardwalk

Saturday, March 15, Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. will host Blarney Bash on Georgia Street, in partnership with Q95, Killian’s Irish Red, Skyy Vodka and Jameson Irish Whiskey, from noon – 10 p.m. on the east block between Meridian and Pennsylvania streets. Festive tents with green beer and Irish spirits will line the boardwalk operated by The Pub Indianapolis, Howl at the Moon and Kilroy’s Bar & Grill. Local bands My Yellow Rickshaw and The Flying Toasters will perform. Admission to the Blarney Bash is FREE, but attendees must be 21 or older.

  • The Hoosier Lottery Greening of the Canal: Friday, March 14 from 5 – 5:45 p.m. at the Stardust Terrace outside the Indiana Historical Society with live music and dancing.
  • The 23rd annual Shamrock Run and Walk takes off from Monument Circle on Saturday, March 15 at 10 a.m. Participate in either the 4-mile run (with timing tag) or the 4-mile fitness walk (without timing tag). Hang around Downtown after the run and participate in ShamRockin’ The Circle from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Eunan McIntyre kicks of the event with a live performance at 9 a.m., followed by Reilly. The Columbia Club will serve food and the beer garden will be open until 1 p.m.
  • The St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Monday, March 17 at 11:30 a.m. on the Downtown parade route. (Some road closures begin along Pennsylvania at 9:30 a.m. and continue on affected streets at 11 a.m. All streets should reopen by 3 p.m.)
  • The Parade Block Party will take place on Vermont Street between Meridian and Pennsylvania streets from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with live music, food and beer.

The Rathskeller hosts the St. Patrick’s Day Tri-Fecta all weekend. Enjoy live music and authentic Irish food on Friday, March 14 from 8 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. and Saturday, March 15 from 8 p.m. – midnight. Don’t miss the 17th Annual Indianapolis Downtown Irish Fest on March 17, also at the Rathskeller, featuring live music from Brian Cunningham & The Irish Aires, the Woomblies and Zanna Doo and sample authentic Irish food. Admission is FREE for both these events.

The Going Green Festival at the Indiana State Museum takes places Friday, March 14 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Saturday, March 15 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. with activities that teach visitors the best ways to conserve energy, the benefits of recycling and more. Meet members of environmental awareness organizations and businesses from around the state who will be available to show you the latest, greatest and simplest ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. The cost to attend is included with museum admission.

Enter the Shamrock 5K Beer Run on March 15 at 3 p.m. and start your run with a toast of Upland Wheat and then stop every kilometer to drink another beer. All runners get shirt, medal and souvenir pint glass of beer. The run begins and ends on Georgia Street.

Other events and specials

  • It’s not really St. Patrick’s Day without a proper pub crawl is it? On Saturday, March 15, the St. Patty’s Pub Crawl will visit Tiki Bob’s, Blue Indy, Subterra Lounge and others starting at noon. The Pub Crawl benefits a local charity.
  • Visit the Indianapolis City Market on Saturday, March 15 from 10 a.m. – noon and enjoy live music from Indianapolis Ceili Band and violinist Samantha Stelting. Make sure to return back on Monday, March 17 for green beads and vendor specials throughout the day.
  • Einstein Bros Bagels at 15 E. Market Street will serve green bagels and baked goods for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. To preorder, email: 2620@einsteinnoah.com.
  • Food Truck Fridays will be a regular occurrence on Georgia Street’s west block from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. beginning March 7. Grab your friends and head out for lunch alfresco on March 14 and enjoy the sights and sounds Downtown. Try something different every week!

Big Ten Basketball: March is on!

Downtown transforms into every basketball fan’s fantasy with the Big Ten Women’s and Men’s Basketball Tournaments at Bankers Life Fieldhouse with 12 teams battling in 11 games for each tournament. No ticket, no problem! With more than 250 restaurants and bars and several fan events, Downtown is the place to catch the action.

Big sports action with NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Regional and more

With 22 games and two titles up for grabs, there will be tons of Big Ten basketball action in Downtown Indy this March. The Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament takes place March 6 – 9 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament takes place March 13 – 16. The two weeks also include several fan events such as the Big Ten Hoops Day 5K, Big Ten Conference Career Expo, pep rallies and more.

NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships come to the IU Natatorium March 19 – 22. The NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional will be at Lucas Oil Stadium March 28 & 30, marking the 19th time Indianapolis will host an NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament event. The regionals were last in Indianapolis in 2009. Tickets are available now.

Nike Mideast Qualifier brings several volleyball tournaments to the Indiana Convention Center March 21 – 23 for thousands of athletes 18 and younger.

The Pacers play seven home games at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in March. The Pacers’ final regular season home game will be April 13 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Ice play two home games at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on March 1 & 23 and one game at Pan Am Pavilion March 22.

Georgia Street comes alive

Beginning March 7, head to Georgia Street every Friday from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. for Food Truck Fridays. Grab your friends and eat out alfresco while enjoying the sights and sounds Downtown. New to Georgia Street, pack your gym bag and ditch the boring treadmill workout for FREE Workout Wednesdays weekly from noon – 1 p.m. Move to energizing, powerful beats and a motivating instructor beginning April 2. Instructors and cardio-based fitness classes will rotate. All fitness levels are welcome.

Warmer weather brings back run/walks!

It’s not quite summer, but March is about the time to dust off the running shoes and take part in some of the great runs and walks. The 500 Festival Training Series 10K, the second training series run, takes off March 1 at 8:30 a.m. in front of the NCAA Hall of Champions. Those interested in running in the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon on May 3 still have time to register online!

Other runs/walks include the Fight for Air Climb on March 8 at Chase Tower and the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Muscle Walk on March 22 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Enjoy a different live performance from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra every weekend in March, starting with Gorecki’s Third Symphony on March 1 at Hilbert Circle Theatre. Enjoy The Firebird on March 6 – 8; Ann Hampton Callaway Sings The Barbra Streisand Songbook on March 14 & 15; Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle: Songs and Stories, Together Onstage on March 22; and Romeo & Juliet on March 28 & 29. Catch Tierney Sutton: After Blue at The Cabaret at the Columbia Club March 19 at 8 p.m.

Beer tents and live music on Georgia Street Boardwalk — plus parade, Shamrock Run/Walk & other big events St. Patrick’s Day weekend

On Saturday, March 16, 2013, Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. will host Indy’s newest St. Patrick’s Day event: Blarney Bash presented by Killian’s on the Georgia Street Boardwalk in between Meridian Street and Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The event opens at noon and runs until midnight and features live music from  My Yellow Rickshaw (2 – 5 p.m.) and Flatbed Twitch (7 – 10 p.m.), with a DJ before, after and in-between bands. An outdoor stage will be in front of Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Green beer will be served inside beer tents along the Georgia Street Boardwalk and food will be available from surrounding bars and restaurants including The Pub Indianapolis, Kilroy’s Bar and Grill, Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery and Howl at the Moon. **Beer tents will be open Friday by 3 p.m. Friday, March 15 for fans heading to Bankers Life Fieldhouse to see the Pacers play the Lakers, and on Sunday, March 17 from noon to 6 p.m.

There will be some road closures and traffic restrictions on or near Georgia Street:

Friday, March 15, noon – 10 p.m.: Eastbound lane of Georgia Street will be closed.

Saturday, March 16, noon – midnight: Both lanes of Georgia Street from Meridian Street to Pennsylvania Street will be closed. Pennsylvania Street from Maryland Street to South Street will also be closed.

Sunday, March 17, noon – 6 p.m.: Both lanes of Georgia Street from Meridian Street to Pennsylvania Street will be closed.

Thursday, March 14

The Hoosier Lottery Greening of the Canal, one of Indy’s favorite FREE, family-friendly St. Patrick’s Day traditions returns to the Stardust Terrace at the Indiana Historical Society, this time in the afternoon instead of the morning as in years past. The fun starts at 4:30 p.m. with live music and dancing, FREE hors d’oeuvres, door prizes, a cash bar and more. The Downtown Canal will be dyed green for the 17th consecutive year at 5:45 p.m.

Friday, March 15

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade Presented by Hoosier Lottery will kick off at 11:30 a.m. on the Downtown parade route – see below for route details. The parade features musicians, floats, dancers and more and is FREE to the public. Get the best view of the beginning of the parade and take advantage of great food and drink specials at The Elbow Room! The Parade Festival will be held on Vermont Street between Meridian and Pennsylvania streets from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is also FREE for all ages with live music, kids’ activities, food trucks and more. The “Irish Citizen of the Year” will be awarded at the festival in addition to parade awards at 1:30 p.m. The Rathskeller hosts the St. Patrick’s Day Tri-Fecta all weekend, starting Friday with live music after the parade from 1 to 11 p.m. at no admission cost. Going Green Festival at Indiana State Museum kicks off Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with fun activities that teach visitors the best ways to conserve energy, the benefits of recycling and more – this event will continue Saturday. The Pacers take on the Los Angeles Lakers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. Beer tents will be open on Georgia Street before the game starting at 3 p.m.

Road closures/restrictions:

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade begins at 11:30 a.m. at North and Pennsylvania streets heading south on Pennsylvania Street, west on Ohio Street and back north on Meridian Street to Michigan Street. Floats will be lined up on Fort Wayne Street. Pennsylvania Street and some surrounding streets will be closed at 9:30 a.m. Ohio and Meridian streets, in addition to cross streets, will close at 11 a.m. All affected parade streets will reopen by 3 p.m. Vermont Street will be closed from 8 a.m. March 14 to 6 p.m. March 15 for the Parade Festival.

Saturday, March 16

The 22nd Annual Shamrock Run/Walk takes off from Monument Circle at 10 a.m., extending four miles through Fountain Square before finishing back at the Circle. ShamRockin’ the Circle begins on Monument Circle at 10 a.m. and runs through 4 p.m., with live music, beer trucks, traditional Irish food from The Columbia Club and more – admission is FREE. St. Patrick’s Day Tri-Fecta continues Saturday with “St. Practice Day” at The Rathskeller featuring live music from 6 p.m. to midnight and Irish food at no admission cost. The Going Green Festival at Indiana State Museum continues with special events Saturday. The Monster Energy Supercross takes place Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Indiana Ice face the Chicago Steel at Bankers Life Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.

Road closures/restrictions:

The Shamrock Run/Walk follows a four-mile route from Monument Circle to Fountain Square via Meridian Street, South Street and Virginia Avenue, then back to the Circle via Fletcher Avenue, East Street and Ohio Street. The NorthEast Quadrant of Monument Circle will be closed to traffic and parking from 4 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 16 and all of Monument Circle will be closed 9 to 11:30 a.m. Streets along this course will remain open to traffic with some lane restrictions when runners are present.

Sunday, March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day!

The St. Patrick’s Day Tri-Fecta at The Rathskeller concludes on Sunday with The 16th Annual Indianapolis Downtown Irish Fest (not to be confused with the summer festival). Guests will enjoy FREE admission, authentic Irish food and live performances from the Irish Dancers of Indianapolis, Gordon Pipers, Woomblies and more. Beer tents on the east block of Georgia Street will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Visit www.indydt.com/stpats.cfm for updated event information.

It’s not really St. Patrick’s Day without a proper pub crawl is it? The Indy St. Pats Pub Crawl hits Slippery Noodle Inn, Hard Rock Cafe, O’Riley’s Irish Bar and Restaurant and others starting at 10 a.m. benefitting Cathedral Soup Kitchen. The Indianapolis Official St. Paddy’s Day Bar Crawl visits Tilted Kilt, The Pub Indianapolis and others on Saturday and Sunday. Please drink responsibly!

At Indianapolis City Market, visitors can enjoy live music Friday during the noon hour and every customer will get green beads to wear! City Market vendors will offer themed specials throughout the day.

Claddagh Irish Pub is kicking off St. Patrick’s Day weekend on March 14 with the Grand Irish Banquet Dinner & Beer Tasting, a five-course dinner pairing with traditional Irish dishes at 7 p.m. for $35 per person. Head back on Sunday for live music all day starting at noon!

Einstein Bros Bagels recently opened at 15 E. Market Street and will be serving green bagels March 15 – 17 and green shamrock-shaped cookies now through St. Patrick’s Day!
