The Banana Tree

‘The Banana Tree’ at Bloomington Playwrights Project, Dec. 6-21.

Visit Bloomington

Twinkling lights and the scent of pine seem to be ever-present in Bloomington during the month of December.  It creates a quaint setting for the holiday season, putting everyone in a cheerful mood and encouraging some serious shopping!  Downtown Bloomington is especially lovely during this time of year, with the canopy of lights illuminating the courthouse square.  Downtown vendors offer up some great deals on unique gift items, many of them made locally.  Fine art by local and national artists, unique children’s clothing and toys, rare books, outdoor gear, apparel and accessories—it’s all available downtown.  The ambiance—and the shopping—of downtown Bloomington just can’t be beat during the month of December.

There’s plenty more than just shopping in Bloomington this month.  Check out the Bloomington Playwrights Project production of The Banana Tree from December 6 through December 21 (see image above).  This zany comedy is from the minds of The Simpsons stars Dan Castellaneta (voice of Homer Simpson) and Deb Lacusta (writer).  It’s about a convenience store clerk, Angela, that dreams of becoming the first African American female magician in Las Vegas.  After a series of hilarious events, Angela finds herself in the middle of a robbery, kidnapping, and at the mercy of a criminal, who also happens to be a telepathic banana tree.  So if you’re in the mood for a laugh, come down to the only professional theatre in Bloomington dedicated to new plays and see what this Banana Tree has in store for Angela.

There are many holiday traditions that families celebrate together, and one of them should be attending the Cardinal Stage Company’s holiday show.  This year, Cardinal presents the kid-friendly Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, from December 20 through January 5 at the historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater.  Charlie Bucket is back and touring the fantastical chocolate factory once again.  With the Oompa Loompas always close behind, join Willie Wonka as he demonstrates his world of pure imagination.

If you’re like most Hoosiers, December also means basketball traditions.  Head to the iconic Assembly Hall as the Indiana University men’s basketball team takes on Nicholls State on December 20 and Kennesaw State on December 22.  With the students out of town for winter break, there are plenty of tickets available and some great hotel deals.

If you haven’t made plans for New Year’s Eve just yet, plan a trip to Bloomington to ring in the New Year.  With a variety of events planned that weekend, there is something for everyone.  Whether you are listening to soul stylings of the Dynamics at the Player’s Pub, or the brooding sounds of Murder by Death (with local favorite the Vallures) at the Bluebird your musical tastes will be satisfied.  Or ring in the New Year with a laugh at the Comedy Attic, where the Limestone Comedy Fest will present Geoff Tate.
