Lynn Rogers, Director of Youth Programs at Concord Neighborhood Center, will receive the 2013 Rev. Charles Williams Award from Indiana Sports Corp and Indiana Black Expo. Rogers will be recognized on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, at the Indiana Sports Corp Pathfinder Awards Luncheon at the Indiana Roof Ballroom, 140 West Washington Street, Indianapolis.

The Rev. Charles Williams Award recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves through direct service to youth in the Indianapolis community. Formerly known as the Chairman’s Award, the award was renamed in July 2004 in honor of the late president of Indiana Black Expo. Past award recipients include Indiana Fever All-Star Tamika Catchings, former Indiana University men’s soccer coach Jerry Yeagley, and former Indiana State Senator Glenn Howard.

“Lynn Rogers personifies what youth development is all about,” said Allison Melangton, Indiana Sports Corp President. “Her dedication to making a difference in the lives of Indianapolis youth is simply remarkable. This community is lucky to have her.”

For 29 years, Rogers has been a consistent and patient force for change within the near-Southside community. As Director of Youth Programs at Concord Neighborhood Center, Rogers works directly with the youth enrolled in Concord’s school-aged programs, simultaneously addressing an array of social and emotional issues, organizing and implementing an engaging curriculum, and advocating for the community at large.

“Lynn Rogers embodies the spirit of Indiana Black Expo’s commitment to youth,” said Tanya Bell, Indiana Black Expo President and CEO. “Her work parallels the vision of IBE – that African American youth and families achieve their highest potential and reflect pride in their ethnicity. We are proud to recognize her nearly three decades of service.”

Rogers has used sports as a catalyst for positive social and emotional growth. Throughout the year, children of all ages are introduced to new and different games, and “Coach Lynn” is careful to focus on the strategy and official rules of each sport as well as the more universal skills of sportsmanship, the importance of practice and endurance, and how to work well with others. In partnership with the PositiveSwing Foundation and the Golf Dome, Rogers started a Concord golf team in 2004 that has become a passion for members of the team—and for her.

Over the course of 29 years, she has directly reached more than 12,000 young people, coaching them both on and off the court. But Rogers is more than a coach; she is a mentor, an advocate and a friend. Sports have always been the means to an end. Teaching life lessons that create better, happier and invested young people is the ultimate goal.

“The Concord board of directors has always respected and valued Lynn’s dedication and passion for serving the children in our community,” said Pat Smithers, President of the Concord Neighborhood Center Board of Directors. “Her impact has known no bounds, and the entire city of Indianapolis is better for it.”

In addition to recognizing Rogers, Jeff and Karen Saturday will be honored as the 2013 Pathfinder Award recipients.
