USA Track & Field

USA Track & Field legend Jackie Joyner-Kersee and 2013 World Champion David Oliver are among the slate of elite track & field athletes participating in USATF Field Day (Dec. 6, 2013) and USATF Community Day (Dec. 7). The events are part of the USATF Annual Meeting being held December 5-8 at the JW Marriott Hotel in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana.

The national governing body for track & field, long distance running and race walking, USATF is headquartered in downtown Indianapolis with a staff of 50, who along with CEO Max Siegel, are administrators to the sport. Siegel, a graduate of Notre Dame Law School and a Park Tudor High School alum, took over the reigns at USATF in 2012.

“USATF is proud to be a part of the Indianapolis community, and giving back to the city where we are based is an important part of our mission,” USATF CEO Max Siegel said. “Field Day and Community Day offer the opportunity for USATF and other local organizations to affiliate on a grassroots level with the message of living a healthy, active lifestyle.”

Field Day, set for Friday, Dec. 6, will introduce 150 local youth, grades 3-5, to track & field through curriculum developed by national track & field coaching education expert, Dr. Matthew Lydum. Scheduled to join Joyner-Kersee and Oliver are American record holder Amanda Bingson, Olympic heptathlon silver medalist Hyleas Fountain, World Championships silver medalist Brigetta Barrett and women’s discus World Championships team member Liz Podominick, who will usher kids through a series of stations with demonstrations and instruction.

Community Day is USATF’s opportunity to share America’s stars of track & field with the greater Indianapolis community. Locals will have the opportunity to shake hands, pose for pictures and collect autographs from athletes including Joyner-Kersee, Oliver, Olympian Queen Harrison, Olympic 100m Hurdles bronze medalist Kellie Wells, Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix (TBD), and World Championships team members Jeremy Taiwo and Jack Whitt.  Additional athletes, including USATF Alumni members, will be present as well.

“Through our wealth of multi-media services, community partnerships and rich educational resources, WFYI Public Media remains steadfast in its commitment to promote healthy lifestyle choices to Hoosier women and their families,” said Jeanelle Adamak, WFYI’s Executive Vice President of Support Services. In 1998, under Adamak’s visionary leadership, WFYI first introduced its unique concept for a daylong conference and community-wide educational initiative designed to educate women about their personal health and well-being.

This year’s Women, Wisdom & Wellness conference highlights will include more than a dozen breakout sessions, information booths, a luncheon keynote, a lovely commemorative tote bag, sponsor gifts and an on-site boutique area featuring an assortment of jewelry, accessories and other fun items.

Julie Schnieders, an accomplished nurse practitioner and the voice of St.Vincent’s health information service, “338-4-her,” will lead you on your journey to wellness. As conference emcee, Schnieders will offer insights on timely women’s health topics and entertain attendees with her unique brand of humor.

Linda Larsen, a witty and gifted motivational speaker, author and on-stage actress, will deliver this year’s luncheon keynote. Larsen will share her powerful story about how she went from making headlines as a kidnap victim to using her frightening experience to help inspire and empower women across the globe.

In conjunction with this year’s theme, “Happy, Healthy Hearts,” free health screenings will be offered for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and BMI. If a test indicates a high risk factor, individuals will receive follow-up counseling from St.Vincent professionals. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about and take the “Healthy Habits Promise”— four simple, healthy habits that can reduce a woman’s chances of a cardiovascular event by nearly 40%. These healthy habits include: avoiding tobacco; reducing BMI; consuming at least five fruits and vegetables daily; and engaging in aerobic exercise three or more hours per week.

WFYI’s Women, Wisdom & Wellness conference is presented by St.Vincent Women’s Services and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The featured sponsor is Fifth Third Bank.
