Each year Indiana joins states across the country in recognizing National Trails Day. The day celebrates the United States’ trail system and its countless supporters and volunteers. This year’s Trails Day is Saturday, June 7, 2014.

Gov. Mike Pence and members of the Indiana Bicentennial Commission will kick off the celebration early with the dedication of the Speedway Trail Corridor on Friday, June 6 at 11:30 a.m. Attendees can “Walk a Mile with Mike” at noon.

A day later, on Trails Day, a variety of activities, including trail cleanups, bicycle rides and guided hikes will be held. The Department of Natural Resources will host events at McCormick’s Creek State Park, Mounds State Park (see photo above), and Lieber State Recreation Area. At Brookville Lake, the DNR will co-host a trail event with the US Army Corps of Engineers. Several other local organizations will host events throughout the state. For a complete listing, see
