Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre presents A NIGHT IN INDIA at The Tarkington at The Center for the Performing Arts, June 9-10, 2017 at 7 pm.

India keeps drawing Mr. Hancock back to its vibrant landscape and culture. After arriving home to Carmel, Indiana last December after his seventh trip to India, GHDT’s Artistic Director Mr. Gregory Hancock is as energized as ever to share his experiences and inspirational discoveries with theater audiences.

“The scope and variety of Indian arts are vast and diverse, and I feel I have only tapped into an extremely small portion of them. I want to share my appreciation for this culture with our GHDT audiences,” Mr. Hancock explains.

The intriguing stories of India’s art, culture and history will forever provoke his thoughts and its richness has naturally sparked his imagination once again to create a work of art filled with stunning music, dance, costumes and theatre sets.

This production will capture the beauty and diversity of this interesting country. As choreographer and storyteller, Mr. Hancock will premiere new works during this performance in addition to presenting other popular company repertoire pieces with Indian flare.

A mix of Eastern and Western music and dance will complement the romantic and dramatic tales of this region. As costumer, he is selecting, designing and constructing costumes and jewelry to enhance the visual authenticity of the evening. As teacher, he will inspire and direct over 20 professional and pre-professional dancers to bring their artistry to the stage.

As artistic director, he will mold all theatrical elements into a one breathtaking 2-hour experience. This is a must-see performance at The Tarkington that will appeal to audiences of all ages.

To complement the evening, an Indian Market will be open in the theatre’s lobby prior to each performance.

Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre is the resident professional dance company at The Tarkington at The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Indiana.

So much can happen in one week. So much can change.

During Easter weekend Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre (GHDT) will portray the monumental events that marked one week — the last week of Jesus Christ’s life — in SUPERHERO: the story of a man called Jesus.

Back for the third consecutive year by popular demand, this critically acclaimed, full-length modern ballet brings to life the struggles of Jesus Christ and the women surrounding him, as well as his complicated relationship with Judas Iscariot. Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 25-26, 2016 at The Tarkington, 3 Center Green, Carmel, Indiana.

With world class dancers, award winning choreography, vivid costuming, and contemporary music, artistic director Gregory Hancock skillfully draws audiences into the poignant emotion of Jesus’s story, while evoking the universality of Jesus’s message and teachings.

A particularly striking feature of the performance is the original set design utilizing texts from the Gospels written in Greek, Latin, Aramaic and English, reinforcing the feeling of a tale belonging in any time and any place.

SUPERHERO features talented guest artists James Gilmer as Jesus and Liang Fu as Judas Iscariot, as well as GHDT company dancers Sarah Sigman as Mother Mary and Hannah Brown as Mary Magdalene.

Considered one of GHDT’s signature works, SUPERHERO has been described as a “whirl of energy . . .through color, light, movement, and sound” and is a timeless retelling of the story of a man who changed history and the world around him forever.

Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre is the resident professional dance company at The Tarkington at The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Indiana.

Randy Newman
Sunday, November 23, 2014, 7pm, Palladium

Randy Newman has long been one of the most musically and lyrically ambitious singer-songwriters in popular music.  His songwriting success includes other artists popularizing his work:  Three Dog Night had a hit with “Mama Told Me (Not To Come)” and Joe Cocker scored with the hilariously lascivious “You Can Leave Your Hat On.”  (àPunctuation to be moved inside quote) Newman’s own Top 40 success came with the most unlikely track, “Short People.”  Other hits include “It’s Money That I Love” and “I Love L.A.”  He has been a prolific film composer, a regular Academy Award nominee and an Oscar winner for “If I Didn’t Have You” from Monsters, Inc.  Among his notable scores are Ragtime, The Natural, Parenthood, Awakenings, Avalon, Pleasantville and Leatherheads.  In recent years, he has specialized in composing for a range of critically acclaimed blockbuster family films, including, Toy Story, James and the Giant Peach, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., and Cars.  Though Newman projects the image of a misanthrope in his own work, he summons tremendous warmth and tenderness in the songs he created for these movies.
